Rest in Peace Dear Brittney

Sadly this is the last post for Brittney.  He passed away yesterday (April 29, 2013) at 9:25AM in his doctor’s office.

Both Carol and Bill Foster were with him at the end.  He was 19 1/2 years old and in frail health with diabetes, neurological disease, hyperthyroidism and several other health issues. He could no longer walk well and was suffering.  It was the most difficult decision Carol and I have every had to make.

Euthanasia took place at his Doctors office by a very caring and loving Dr. named Jennifer Willy.  We were holding him has he took his last breath and still have not fully recovered and I don’t know if we every will.

We were able to donate all his food, toys, furniture and other items to a needy group that takes care of lost and suffering cats here in Las Vegas.  They were very grateful and so were we as we were in shock.  Brittney went down hill so quickly but he was very old and frail.

Brittney was a wonderful cat.  He was so full of playfulness and life and he made our life so full of joy it will be difficult for us.  As a tribute to him, I found this poem and will post it now:

If I Should Grow Frail

If it should be that I grow frail and weak

And pain does keep me from my sleep

Then will you do what must be done

for this – is the last battle – can’t be won.

——————————————————–

You will be sad I understand

But don’t let grief then stay your hand

For on this day, more than the rest

Your love and friendship must stand the test.

————————————————————

We have had so many happy years,

You wouldn’t want me to suffer so.

When the time comes, please, let me go.

—————————————————–

Take me to where my needs they’ll tend,

Only, stay with me till the end.

And hold me firm and speak to me

Until my eyes no longer see.

——————————————————————

I know in time you will agree

It is a kindness you do to me.

Although my tail its last has waved,

From pain and suffering I have been saved.

————————————————————————

Don’t grieve that it must now be you

Who has to decide this thing to do.

We’ve been so close – we three – these years,

Don’t let your heart hold any tears.

Rest in Peace Dear Friend

  1. You’re eulogy is beautiful. My deepest sympathies for you and your family. You’re right. The death of a furry family member is something you can never “get over” or “bounce back” from.

  2. It is a very difficult and painful decision to take a cat to a vet for euthanasia, but sometimes it is the most compassionate and kind thing to do. We had to make that decision too.
My heart goes out to you.

  3. Bill.. my Brother and Mother recently had to make the same difficult decision you and Carol were faced with. Their beautiful Lucy was nearly 18 and a half and had become so frail. I also had to make the same decision with my Eldest Daughter for our beautiful cat a few years ago – she had reached 16 and was so ill with cancer.
You and Carol have made the right decision – and your choice of eulogy for your beautiful Brittney reflects that you are both truly wonderful, loving people who only ever had Brittney’s best interests at heart. Brittney will always love you as much as you loved him.
You are in my thoughts today…
… lots of love from the South East of England x x x

  4. Dear Bill, I’m so sorry to hear that! I know how it is to make this decision and Jake and I have both suffered to let Cherie go.
Sometimes it’s just the right decision to make this path for our beloved kitty a little easier to go.
Brittney is at a better place now, where he’ll continue playing – and waiting. He’ll always be your cat!
    I do think about you!
    Raani
